8 Ways to Show Dad You Care

CATEGORIES

posted on Tuesday, June 11, 2019

Father’s Day is a special day to celebrate that special guy in your life who helped shape you into the person you are today. He also probably taught you how to tell a joke, say a few inappropriate words and generally showed you all the behaviors that mom ultimately had to correct. And that’s why we love him.

Here are a few ways to show "Pops" that you care.

  1. GRAB A DRINK WITH THE OLD MAN
When you were younger, all you wanted to do was take a sip of his beer. Now, you can kick back a few with pops at one of Waterloo’s great drinking holes.

Is Dad a CRAFT BEER kind of fella? Then you’ll definitely want to check out SingleSpeed Brewing Co. in downtown Waterloo. They are housed in the 30,000 square foot former Wonder Bread Factory and are the winner of the 2019 Des Moines Register’s Iowa Beer Bracket for their Tip the Cow cocoa espresso milk stout. You can even get dad a Brewery Tour for Saturday, June 15th by clicking here.

Is the old timer more of a SPIRITS fan? Then you’ve got to check out the Iron Horse Social Club, located at a former John Deere tractor assembly site turned Courtyard by Marriott in downtown Waterloo. This unique intimate space is perfect for that renaissance dad that just wants to sit back and enjoy a nice aged whiskey, bourbon or another cocktail in style.

Is Padre more of a TRADITIONAL BEER kind of fella? Anton’s Garden, downtown Waterloo’s new German Beer Garden (Biergarten) is a fun little spot to hang out, catch some sun and throw a few cold ones back with Dad. Who knows – maybe he’ll even try one or two of those “fancy” German beers that taste so good yet no one can pronounce them correctly.

  2. GOLF THE DAY AWAY
Do you love golf? Well, what better way to share something you and dad can both enjoy. Waterloo is home to 4 great yet affordable public golf courses – Irv Warren, Gates, Red Carpet & South Hills. If you don’t love golf but dad does, then just think of it as repayment for all of those middle school band concerts he went to just for you (trust us, if it weren’t for you, he wouldn’t have been there).

  3. WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE
If your old man is a history buff, you’ll definitely want to check out the “Sulkies to Speedways: A Need for Speed in the Cedar Valley” exhibit at the Grout Museum in Waterloo. You’ll also want to take dad through the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum, part of the Grout Museum District, and honor the service of America’s heroes
    .
  4. CLOTHES
Just because you’re getting your dad a tie for the umpteenth year in a row doesn’t mean it has to be ugly. Stop into Palace Clothiers, 2100 Kimball Avenue, and pick up a great tie and even a pair of fun socks – because fashion socks are just like power ties for your ankles. Look - he’s worn the same suit since 1977, the least we can do is help freshen up the look with a cool tie and some sweet socks from the local men’s clothing institution known as Palace Clothiers.

  5. THE TABLES & A STEAK
With 25 tables and 950 slots, the Isle Casino Hotel Waterloo is a great way to spend time with dad with their “Putt Gold Father’s Day Giveaway” promotion. The first 500 guests who visit the Putt Gold kiosk will play for a chance to win great prizes, including Free Play, free drinks, dine-in credits, and a flat-screen TV. The Isle also offers great dining like Otis & Henry’s Steakhouse (because every dad loves a good steak), Brew Brothers (because dads always love burgers and beers) and the Farmers Pick Buffet (because who doesn’t like seconds).

  6. PALMER'S FAMILY FUN
Mini-golf, batting cages, driving range, archery course, go-kart track – pretty much everything out here will help keep Dad feeling like a kid. All he really wants is to see the kids happy – it would be even better if he gets to have some fun along the way. At Palmer’s Family Fun, there will be no shortage of memories created & good times had.

  7. LOST ISLAND
Look, we get it. It’s June and it’s hot. Do you know who else thinks it’s hot? That sweating guy sitting in the recliner. Why not help Dad cool off with a fun family trip to Lost Island Waterpark. It’s a top 10 nationally ranked Waterpark and it’s right here in Waterloo, Iowa.

  8. CATCH A GAME
Is there anything more “Dad” than sports? Take Dad to a Cedar Valley CourtKings minor league basketball game at the Cedar Valley Sportsplex, located in downtown Waterloo, on Saturday, June 15th starting at 7:30pm. Or check out the Waterloo Bucks as they host the Thunder Bay Border Cats at 2:05pm on Sunday, June 16th on Cost Cutter Field at Riverfront Stadium.

Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's out there from all of us at Experience Waterloo
