MLK Day: How to Dedicate Your Day Off to the King

MLK Day: How to Dedicate Your Day Off to the King

posted on Thursday, January 16, 2020

Want to make your Martin Luther King Jr. holiday a day on instead of a day off? Want to use it to celebrate diversity and service, or maybe both at the same time? The Cedar Valley has many events where you can celebrate the peaceful king, who once visited Waterloo himself!

Spots to serve:

  • Animal lovers rejoice! You can offer your helping hands at the Hearst Center for the Arts in Cedar Falls, where they will be crafting toys and blankets for the Cedar Bend Humane Society. Here’s a link to the event.
  • An Intense Impact: Join thousands of volunteers in the UNI Dome to help pack bags for the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. You can register to volunteer here
  • Make it a family affair! Join the Volunteer Center of the Cedar Valley at the First Presbyterian Church for a Family MLK Day of Service. There will be a variety of kid-friendly crafts that double as service projects for different organizations in the Cedar Valley. Here are the details.

Events to attend

  • Breakfast of Unity: Mayor Quentin Hart is hosting a “Together We Can” faith breakfast in celebration of MLK Day. Join him & a group of diverse local faith leaders for a morning of ‘encouragement and inspiration’ at the Waterloo Center for the Arts. Believe Waterloo will also be awarding its first grant to the Waterloo Youth City Council during the event. Tickets are $20 and can be bought through the Mayor’s office. Here’s the full event.
  • Kindermusik for a Cause: This Little Light Studio in Cedar Falls is doing a pop-up kindermusik class for only $12 on MLK Day. To learn more, click here
  • Hoops for Hope: Join the Boys and Girls Club of the Cedar Valley for their King’s Dream Basketball Exhibition, where kids, cops, and their community come together for some friendly competition. There will be a speech about the importance of unity at halftime. For more information, click here.
  • A Meaningful Meal: Join Social Action Inc. for the 41st annual MLK banquet Sunday at Electric Park Ballroom in Waterloo. There will be motivational speakers alongside dinner.  Tickets are  $50 for adults and $25 for students and the theme is “Your Life’s a Blueprint.” For group prices and details, click here
